About Buffer

At Buffer, we make social media and brand building software for small businesses, creators, and individuals. Our mission is to provide essential tools to help small businesses get off the ground and grow. Through exceptional customer service and uplifting content, we help our customers believe they can succeed and do good along the way.

We’re a fully distributed team, and we’ve always aimed to do things a little differently at Buffer. Since the early days, we’ve had a focus on building one of the most unique and fulfilling workplaces by rethinking a lot of traditional practices. We also default to transparency, so you can read all about our metrics, and our successes and failures along the way on our Transparency Dashboard.

We hire and work from all over the world. Please note that we do travel to work together in-person once or twice per year, and those events are highly encouraged to build deeper connections among our small team.

We're united by Buffer's values, and we celebrate our unique differences. We strive to create a diverse and inclusive work environment and are building a culture where underrepresented groups are welcome, and can flourish.

As you get to know Buffer and consider joining the journey, feel free to read more from Kirsti, who recently documented her first 30 days at Buffer, as well as from Hailley, who captured why she still calls Buffer home after 8 years.

About the role

As Senior Social Media Manager, you'll take full ownership of Buffer's social media presence across all platforms, embodying our brand in every piece of content and interaction. This role is unique due to our commitment to transparency—a significant part of your responsibility will be turning internal content into compelling external posts. We're seeking a high-performing individual contributor capable of managing all aspects of our social media efforts, from content creation and community engagement to analyzing performance and adjusting strategy. Given the unique nature of this role, a deep understanding of Buffer's product and culture is essential.

Who you'll work with

In this role, you’ll report to Hailley Griffis, our Head of Communications and Content. Day-to-day you’ll work closely with the rest of our tight-knit Marketing team, which spans content, growth, and product. We are a small team with a lot of ownership. You’ll also work cross-functionally with the Advocacy and Product team, as well as members of the Leadership team.

Responsibilities

  • Developing high-quality content that performs well and aligns with our brand. Buffer has a strong and unique brand. You will work to refine how we share our work on social media so that it performs well with our audience and stays true to Buffer’s brand. This requires excellent written skills and some design and video capabilities.
  • Being a funnel for transparency at Buffer. You deeply understand the topics that are top of mind at Buffer and share those externally in engaging posts on all social platforms. This can look like pulling from company All Hands meetings, internal documentation, or other team conversations.
  • Representing Buffer in public. This is a highly-visible role. You are comfortable with appearing publicly on behalf of Buffer, whether that is within the community as yourself, replying with your name on social, or creating videos you are speaking in.
  • Collaborating across the company. You will work with teammates in every area at Buffer, including our leadership team, to pull content ideas and opportunities from their existing work and to help highlight a wide variety of projects.
  • Keeping community a top focus. We have a lot of individuals who work on community at Buffer, so this isn’t the sole responsibility of the SMM, however we need someone who has a community-focus and can engage in a natural way with our existing community.
  • Engaging and responding authentically. You are the primary person replying from Buffer’s social account to engage with responses that are true to our brand voice and tone.
  • Sharing expertise. As Buffer’s social media manager, you are both part of the team and a key user — it’s important that you are connected to the Product team to share feedback and ideas regularly, but also that you are bringing insights from being closer to customers and more aware of social media trends into company and Marketing discussions regularly.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years experience as an in-house social media manager and a proven track record of independently managing and growing a social media presence for brands. Experience in tech/SaaS is a plus. This is a senior role, so it is key that you have achieved significant results here before.
  • An existing and deep understanding of Buffer’s product and culture is essential. You can already easily talk about Buffer to others.
  • Excellent content creation skills including exceptional writing and editing skills, with the ability to adapt tone and style for different platforms and audiences. You can also independently create basic videos and graphics and have a natural and engaging presence when on camera.
  • Strong at creating and executing on social media strategy across social networks and adapting to new social networks as they arise. Specific experience with LinkedIn and Instagram is essential. Experience with Threads, Mastodon, or Bluesky is a plus.
  • Comfortable digging into performance data and analysis and using those insights to adjust strategy and report on overall impact.
  • A natural desire to be active on social media is essential, we are looking for candidates who are already active on their own personal social media profiles and can speak from personal experience.
  • An interest in decentralized social media platforms is a plus.
