Web3 has created a new era of decentralized finance, democratizing financial access. However, it has fallen short in generating mass consumer applications and remains largely centered around finance. We believe blockchain technology is a cornerstone for the future of new, open Internet applications.
Today, there are limits to what you can build on-chain. Many factors constrain this, from the cost of running applications to the fundamental performance limitations of existing blockchains. We believe that new technologies can unlock a new class of real-time applications that normally must be built on Web2 foundations. Enabling these systems to be built on-chain will allow the free movement of businesses and users between online platforms, creating what we call a true virtual society.
We are building Somnia, a fast and cost-effective EVM-based blockchain, to achieve this. Somnia is a layer-one blockchain with full EVM compatibility, capable of processing over 400,000 transactions per second with sub-second latency and low fees. This will unlock a new wave of on-chain applications. Initially, we are focusing on gaming, metaverse, and social experiences. But we are not even 100% certain of what can be built with the technology we are creating.
Somnia is being developed byVirtual Society Foundation, an independent organisation initiated byImprobable, a British start-up that has been at the forefront of building virtual worlds for over a decade. VSF received initial funding fromMSquared, which raised $150 million in funding from a16z crypto, SoftBank, Mirana Ventures, CMT Digital, and SIG.
As a Graphic Designer, your role is crucial in creating visually compelling content that enhances our project's brand and engages our online community. You will be responsible for designing social media posts, web pages, posters, and presentation slides/decks, ensuring that all visual content aligns with our brand’s identity and goals.

Be at the forefront of maintaining and enhancing mission-critical infrastructure technology for some the world’s most established banks and financial institutions! 💷
As a Senior Engineer in the UK Engineering Team, you’ll be at the forefront of maintaining and enhancing mission-critical infrastructure technology for some the world’s most established banks and financial institutions.
An opportunity to make significant impact by identifying and implementing improvements that enhance the performance, scalability and reliability of high-volume payment systems. You’ll ensure our platform runs seamlessly, contributing to the backbone of UK financial operations.
You’ll collaborate with a team of talented senior engineers, tackling the challenges of securely processing millions of transactions per day, driving forward the operational excellence needed to maintain a high-performance, critical service.
Essential
Desirable
Here are a few of the tools and methodologies we utilise:
Infrastructure: AWS, GCP, Azure, Kubernetes, Hybrid Cloud
Platform: CockroachDB, Vault, NATS, Cilium
Tools: Terraform, GitHub, Prometheus, Pact.io, Tilt
Code: Go (and a little Java), containerised microservices, open source
Ways of working: Pair Programming, 100% remote, SecDevOps
Team Size: You’ll be joining a group of 6-7 Senior Engineers, led by Lead Engineer.
Daily Routine: UK teams have an optional daily sync/social meeting, with daily updates provided asynchronously via Slack.
Responsibility: You’ll take ownership of the entire delivery process. This includes problem exploration, solution development, and collaborating across other functions (Product, Customer Operations, etc.)
Workflow: We embrace flexible workflow, adapting to the needs of our projects and team members. Our approach is similar to Kanban.
Estimates & Planning: Most work is customer facing, so clear communication of delivery dates is key to managing expectations. We aim to keep the process light and efficient.
Customer support: You’ll support high-volume payment products for large financial institutions and banks, helping resolve queries and investigating transaction anomalies. While day-to-day interaction with customers is minimal (we have dedicated teams to handle customer communication), significant part of the work is driven by customer requests. We’re always seeking opportunities to optimise and automate this work.
Type of work: The main challenge in front of the UK team is continuously improving the reliability, observability and performance of a mature, high-volume payments platform. This includes deep analysis of issues, designing and executing robust testing strategies, and a keen eye for noticing risk and inefficiencies with a drive to reduce them.
Objectives: Expand Form3’s position in the UK market by onboarding customers and provide them with the best platform by exceeding reliability and availability SLAs.
Stage 1: Screening Call with Talent Team
Stage 2: Take home test
Stage 3: Team interview
Stage 4: Technical interview

This is a general selection process for software engineers focused on virtualisation and container technology - from the kernel through userspace. Apply here if you are an exceptional Go, Rust, or C/C++ software engineer and want to work on next-generation open source VMM or container technology, or related open source networking and storage.
Container, virtualisation and cloud infrastructure have become essentials of modern software deployments. We invest in open source related to application isolation, workload orchestration, system or OCI containers, micro service architecture or cloud infrastructure.
Here are some examples of projects under way at Canonical.
RustVMM has great potential as a new hypervisor for Linux. We are building a team to work on this, with an emphasis on performance, security and operability. Work in Rust and bring your expert knowledge of VMM and related kernel networking and storage capabilities.
Docker images are easy to make and publish on Docker Hub and other registries, but the quality, consistency and security maintenance of those images is broadly very poor. Canonical is in a good position to publish a portfolio of outstanding Docker images. Our Rockcraft team is designing and implementing an elevated Docker image experience for the open source community.
LXD is a modern system container and virtual machine manager that is widely used on Ubuntu, ChromeOS and other Linux platforms. LXD engineering spans the entire software stack from low-level kernel work on namespaces, confinement, security, filesystems, VMMs and networking, to the high level management REST API and CLI.
Members of the Kubernetes product team build MicroK8s for on-rails K8s, and Charmed Kubernetes for more sophisticated integration. We work on K8s itself and on the operations tooling around it.
The OpenStack team deliver Charmed OpenStack, OVN / OVS and Ceph. This work brings cloud platform technologies to large-scale computing environments.
These teams hire system level C/C++, Golang, Rust and Python developers to work on security-critical, performance-critical and mission-critical code, focused on software delivery, containers, security, sandboxing, application orchestration and management. Our teams are motivated to have a meaningful impact on modern cloud computing technologies.
Location: we have remote container and virt engineering roles in every time zone.
Additional skills we value
We consider geographical location, experience, and performance in shaping compensation worldwide. We revisit compensation annually (and more often for graduates and associates) to ensure we recognise outstanding performance. In addition to base pay, we offer a performance-driven annual bonus. We provide all team members with additional benefits, which reflect our values and ideals. We balance our programs to meet local needs and ensure fairness globally.
Canonical is a pioneering tech firm at the forefront of the global move to open source. As the company that publishes Ubuntu, one of the most important open source projects and the platform for AI, IoT and the cloud, we are changing the world on a daily basis. We recruit on a global basis and set a very high standard for people joining the company. We expect excellence - in order to succeed, we need to be the best at what we do. Canonical has been a remote-first company since its inception in 2004. Working here is a step into the future, and will challenge you to think differently, work smarter, learn new skills, and raise your game.
We are proud to foster a workplace free from discrimination. Diversity of experience, perspectives, and background create a better work environment and better products. Whatever your identity, we will give your application fair consideration.
